Feb. 23rd, 2004 11:36 amWhat do I do when a resident tells me, "Learn some, but not all" about my experience on this floor? She just got booted from the program, and how do I react to that? I'm not staff, but I sort of am. I wasn't a part of the decision, but I back it. How do I interact with her when she stops by my office? I tell the truth, that I'll miss her attitude in Readiness classes. Because I will. But she's not right for this program, and she wasn't being near complient, so it makes sense that she's been asked to leave. She told me I have a good heart, but that other staff here don't. She told me, "Don't be like them." For the most part, I really do respect the staff here. I trust their decisions. I know it's about learning my own practice style, but somehow, "practice" seems different than interacting in a more informal way. What am I learning? Really, what am I learnign to enforce? She said, "They don't look at the whole picture." That's what we're taught to do in social work, look at the whole picture. I do think this woman should have been discharged, but she has circumstances that make me empathize with her situation. There are some things that make it a lot harder for her when it comes to being complient with our program. So how heavy does it weigh in that she agreed to all these aspects of the program when she moved in? She knew what she was getting into, and she was given a lot of chances.
I guess what I really don't know is what to say to her. "I'm sorry you're leaving?" I'm not entirely sorry. I ended up just asking where she was going, when she was leaving by, that sort of thing. I just didn't know what to say. The team might make decisions, but they don't sit with me in my office while I react to it.
