Jan. 17th, 2004 01:22 amOur big APO regional conference started today, held right at Creighton. I haven’t even been terrifically involved in the planning or details of it, but I somehow managed to spend from 5:30 til midnight tonight up at school working on registration, the store, banquet set-up, and general running around. Wore me out, but it’s been a really good time. A nice chance to see some of my favorite APOers again. Julia and I have been hanging out, and I’ve been enjoying that immensely. Everything makes sense with her, in a lot of ways. And I’ve spent time recently with Katie J as well, what with tonight, APO fun on Wednesday, and spending an hour on the phone the other day- very good to catch up with her.
The whole conference has had me remembering the fun of New Orleans. All the craziness, the random kids lounging and running around, all of whom are into service. I feel really energized when I see over 400 people come to Omaha, Nebraska because they are interested in service work- I think that means a lot. The feeling was there even more strongly in New Orleans, just another aspect that makes conferences like these seem pretty powerful.
In a series of workshops in New Orleans (APO’s leadership development program), I sat with this guy from St. Louis University. I’d recognized him at the first workshop after I’d done a service project with the SLU group the day before. We ended up in all three workshops (12 hours worth) together, just cracking smiles and comments about how our campuses and chapters differ from so many of these other groups. I have no idea what his name is, but we both enjoyed seeing a friendly face each day. Well, he showed up at Creighton tonight! Yea! (Along with something like thirty other SLU kids.) It was nice to see him, just saying hi and whatnot. Nothing deep, or intense, but just nice to make connections again. It really brightened my evening.
Classes have started off well. I like saying, “I really like family violence,” when I mean that so far, the class about it seems like it will be really good. And practicum is awesome. I’ve just rushed back into things right away the two days I’ve spent there this week, and I love love love it. Was going to do an interview this afternoon, but we ended up rescheduling it. But I wasn’t even feeling too nervous about it. And I sat in on case management yesterday, and then stayed to talk to Lisa, the case manager, after the session for a while. And today I had a good supervision session. And on Tuesday I get to teach Readiness class!!!! Bethany gave me the packet, her outline, other notes, and things, and on Tuesday, I’ll get to lead the class! Hooray!! I just feels like the whole staff is starting to treat me more and more as one of them- a social worker more and more, less and less the observer. It excites me a lot. :)
What is also exciting is that even though I haven’t even been back in Omaha a week, I get to see my parents on Monday! They’re taking advantage of our flight benefits and coming down. My mom is even staying overnight, Daddy just for the day. They’re coming to the Martin Luther King ceremony that Creighton is doing. You can look at more info about it at www.creighton.edu/MLK. You might even notice that award thing they’re giving out, and you might notice that your friend T-Dawg is bragging right now when I am excited that I got nominated for it! So Mommy and Daddy are coming to town, and I am way excited. Hooray!
So now it is definitely after one in the morning, and I need to be at school by 7:30 in the morning, probably not to return home until seven at night. And then only to change into my fancy banquet clothes to go back to school til midnight. Rar. But on the plus side, Taylor said he would be my conference boyfriend this weekend. Talk about rar! :)
