Everything in the world has happened since I last updated a month and a million years ago.

I didn’t really have scabies, just some bug bites that seem to be leaving scars.

New York was wonderful. I wrote a play that I should post here. We saw Cabaret, and decided the bestest ever plan for Johnny Depp’s residence while he works making shoes for our company. We were touristy and we hung out, and I only cried a small amount when I got on the shuttle to leave. There was a lot more to the trip, but far too few of you would find it funny. But! It is Miss Shannon’s twenty-second birthday today, so please cheer for her. Send her cake in spirit, and if you think that her Meg smells bad, you can flip her off, because she did it to me. ;)

Colin and the crowd road-tripped up to the Cities for the Amnesty regional conference, and we had a super time. I felt inept at directing them around my stomping grounds, but it got better. We ate good food, even if we did find out that McDonald’s owns both Chipotle and Noodles. But I got to attend good workshops about lobbying and about the small arms trade and things. And we went to the Brave New Workshop for our entertainment. Oh! And it SNOWED! So I did some prancing at one in the morning on Hennipenn Avenue.

I made an important decision that I’ll write about later, though I didn’t actually do any processing on it until weeks later.

I came back to school and after two days it felt like two weeks. Was it time for Thanksgiving break yet?

We’re getting a new roommate at Community, though, and that’s really awesome. Caitlin is going to move in over Christmas break, and we’re all excited. She and William have been dating for some time, which is how she found out about us. She’s going to be great for the Community, a wonderful fit. Someone all the way from Cleveland to live with us. And her presence will probably even encourage William to shower more often. ;)

We also had another roommate for about a month- William’s friend from HS, Nick, is in the Air Force, stationed at Offutt. So he started hanging out a while back, and basically moved in about a month ago. A great guy- got along super well with everyone (um, especially Meghan!). But then November 15th came really fast, his scheduled date to leave for Germany for, oh, two years. It’s going to be really different not having him around, now- going to change things. He somehow felt like a natural addition to the houses, which is kind of weird. I hadn’t really ever pictured the situation of someone regularly leaving our house at 7 a.m. dressed in an Air Force uniform with us saying in high voices, “Goodbye, sweetie, have a good day at work! See you at dinnertime!” But that’s how it happened, and it worked so well. He isn’t in the Air Force to be in the Air Force, if that makes sense.
And really, sometimes I just do not think I will ever understand the armed forces.
Why is it that you don’t get to go to college unless you got good enough grades to pay for it or unless you are privileged enough to pay for it on your own? Why is it that Nick had to join the military in order to get schooling past high school?

Retreat, retreat, retreat. How many retreats can Theresa attend in one November? I think the answer is nearing five.

Got over the crush on Paul, and have probably moved on to a new social work major (a junior) named Bill. It’s just better that way. He’s mostly just a great guy who I find incredibly easy to talk to about things we think are important. I think he’s swell, and I could classify him as an intrigue, for those of you who understand how I use the word.

In five days we leave for Georgia. Oh my goodness!
I really will have to talk about all of that later. But it will be good. Even if Shannon can’t come, it will still be good. So much is happening about all of that. There’s a lot to think about.

That’s where things stand now, as far as the barebones of what has happened in the last month. Most of it revolves around Community, but really, a lot of things do these days. Or this year.

Noodles

Where did you hear that Noodles is owned by McDonalds? I asked them once if they were owned by the same company as Chipotle and the person working there said that weren't, but that they did have the same realtor for awhile. I'd be interested to know where you found that out since my source may not be as reliable as yours.

One of the girls at the Amnesty conference told me that Noodles is owned by McDonald's, so that's my only source. And I think we all made the assumption that Chipotle was as well, since every Chipotle we knew of was within a block of a Noodles. But the idea of the same realtor does make sense, and maybe I should stop assuming things about Chipotle. So I may be totally wrong, and it is afterall, some hearsay. But let me know if you find anything else out.

McDonald's Company

Actually, if you ever want to look up a companies holdings look in its annual reports filed with SEC. It's called a 10K form and can be found in the edgar database (available at http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml ). I did some searching on noodles before I remembered this nice fact and I found out that both noodles and Krispy Kreme are owned by Great Circle Management, L.L.C which is a private company not owned by McDonald's.

Looking in McDonald's' 10K annual report we find a list of companies which are owned by McDonald's: Boston Market, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Donatos Pizzeria. Notice their incentive in these reports is to show investors how much they have and how profitible they can become so it is in there interests to list all the companies (i.e. brands, i.e. intangible assets). Now you know what places to boycott if that is what you want to do.

McDonald's CIK is 0000063908 . This number is needed for finding their reports on SEC's website.

There are a lot of people in the activist movements that avoid eating at monsterous chain resteraunts. A lot of people would rather support more local establishments or small chains. McDonald's certainly doesn't need money from me too often, I think, they probably have a fair amount. So regular visits to Chipotle and to Noodles helps support businessestakingover.

Large businesses not neccessarily a bad thing, but McDonald's has a history of treating its workers poorly and exploiting the poor. Not to mention, it helped bring into place the current factory farming that is a drain on the land and displacing many family farms.
