Jul. 13th, 2003 07:37 pmThings I learned/found interesting today:
--It costs $1 million per missile launched on Iraq
--Only 10% of Americans connect their faith to the war in Iraq
--$60 billion is only 15% of military spending
--“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” -Eisenhower
--By 1989, more Vietnam vets had died or committed suicide than had died during the war
--“It’s not a matter of no military, it’s a matter of how much.” -Tom White
--$400 billion is the military’s allotted spending- more than the total of the next highest 20 nations in military spending.
--Canada spends $8 billion on their military
--That $400 billion doesn’t include the money for Iraq, which brings to total to $550 billion
--For every dollar the federal government spends on the military, they spend fourteen cents on education
--“You either pay now [for HeadStart], or you pay later for jails.” -Tom White
--One aircraft carrier costs $5 billion
--65,000 teachers could be paid for two years for the cost of one aircraft carrier
--In Cuba, teachers are paid the same amount as doctors
--“Jesus didn’t ask us to be security-makers.” -Bishop Gumbleton
--another quote about being peace-makers, not just peace-lovers, but I missed who said it
--We are 5% of the world’s population, and we use 30% of the world’s resources
--We supply weapons to 156 countries
--“We have made the military our god, and we have put our faith in guns and violence.” -Tom White
I feel a hundred times better today about things. Much less frazzled than I felt for a chunk of last night after my driving escapades all around the Cities. The talk I went to at church this morning was really good, and what I’d been needing. It re-energized me in a justice sense, something that is often hard for me to find (other than occasional bursts of outrage) when I’m on vacation. Tom White was the one who gave the talk (Bana, I went up to introduce myself afterwards, and that was good. I’ve heard your family talk about him for so long, that I decided it was time to say hello!), and he’s a part of a few different Minnesota peace groups, as well as a member of Pax. And tonight I took a three-hour nap to catch up on my sleep that didn’t happen last night, when I’d gone to bed at three. After I got up and was making dinner, Mana called, and we got caught up on things. I’m so excited to see her this coming weekend, and it was really nice to just chat about her family-reunion-weekend and everything. So now I am awake, and I feel very accomplished for today. I also went shopping with my parents to get some social worker clothes. You know, they’re a lot like my lawyer clothes. So things are good. It’s so nice to have a feeling of accomplishment, even if it’s only over one day’s activities. I haven’t felt that for a while.
